Usually, when an accident happens, drivers know what went wrong. Maybe they hit the gas instead of the brake, or the safety brake wasn’t on and the car rolled down a hill. Sometimes, though, a driver will claim he or she doesn’t know how a crash happened, and that can get a little confusing.

According to a woman’s story, she doesn’t know how her foot became trapped under a brake pedal, but that mistake led to her crashing into a Costco store and killing two people while injuring two others. She claimed she’d driven many kinds of cars and never had an issue before this situation, drawing into question whether or not it was a mechanical failure.

The 66-year-old woman was reversing in the parking lot of the Costco when she realized that her foot was stuck. She attempted to dislodge it, but instead, she traveled around 58.7 meters before crashing into the store and into a family. She struck and killed a 6-year-old girl, injured the girl’s mother, sister and her mother’s unborn child.

As of the time of the report, the woman had pleaded not guilty to the charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and charges of criminal negligence causing death. The deputy attorney for the prosecution has been asking the woman why she didn’t brake with her other foot, pull the emergency brake or honk the horn; she claims she just wanted to get her foot loose. The police haven’t yet released information on how they think the woman became trapped or the full cause of the accident.
