Bicyclists are at the mercy of motorists when they are out for a ride. It is crucial for drivers to make sure that they are driving in a manner that helps to keep bicyclists safe. This is because bicyclists can be severely injured if they are struck by a motor vehicle.

How closely should motorists follow bicyclists?

Motorists can’t follow too closely behind a bicyclist because of all of the unknowns that can occur while the bicyclist is riding. Ideally, motorists will remain at least three to four seconds behind a bicyclist when they are driving. This should be increased if the roads are wet, snow covered or icy. Additionally, motorists should check their mirrors every five to eight seconds to ensure that they are aware of their surroundings and so they can spot bicyclists that are just coming into the area.

How should motorists pass cyclists?

Motorists should only pass cyclists when it is safe to do so. The cyclist needs to have ample room as the vehicle passes. No motorists should sound the horn when passing the cyclist because this can startle the cyclist. Motorists must also be sure that the cyclist isn’t planning a turn that would affect the pass. Additionally, motorists should make sure that they signal their intention to pass the cyclist well in advance of beginning the move.

If you were on a bicycle and got struck by a motorist who wasn’t driving safely, you might choose to seek compensation for your injuries. It is important for you to understand all of the options that you have for your medical bills and other expenses related to the accident.
