The Brain Injury Institute Organization states a frontal lobe brain injury is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that affects the front area of your brain. This is the brain’s largest lobe.

“The frontal lobe controls motor skills like hand/eye coordination, conscious thought, emotions, and even your personality. As a result of a brain injury, frontal lobe damage may impair your attention span, motivation, judgment, and organizational capacity.”

Effects of Frontal Lobe Damage

Left frontal lobe damage will affect language, verbal skills and positive emotions.

Right frontal lobe damage will affect non-verbal communication and negative emotions.

The degree of dysfunction caused by right frontal lobe damage or left frontal lobe damage will depend on your abilities before the TBI, as well as the extent, location, and nature of the damage as a result of the TBI.

Neuropsychological evaluations are used to assess frontal lobe damage. The testing measures speech, motor skills, social behavior, spontaneity, impulse control, memory, problem solving, language, and more.

Frontal lobe damage is most often the result of an injury caused by a fall, gunshot, or car accident. Frontal lobe damage may be permanent; however, rehabilitation and treatment can enable you to regain a degree of prior functioning. The goal of rehabilitation is to strengthen existing skills and compensating for lost skills. The focus of rehabilitation is placed on helping individuals regulate emotions and curb impulsive behaviors.
