A three-car crash in Ontario, which caused one of the vehicles involved to catch fire, resulted in the deaths of two men on Jan. 27. Though adverse weather conditions were present in the area where the crash occurred, police did not believe that they contributed to the accident.
The crash happened just before 7 a.m. on Highway 6 just south of Hamilton. According to the report, an 18-year-old Caledonia man driving a Volvo crossed the centre line of the highway. When the Volvo entered oncoming traffic in the other lanes of the highway, it collided with an SUV and then caught fire. A third vehicle carrying two Dunnville men was also involved in the crash. The Volvo’s driver managed to escape from his burning car, but later died in hospital. The SUV’s driver, a 53-year-old Caledonia man, died at the scene of the accident. The men in the third vehicle, ages 19 and 44, suffered minor injuries in the crash and were treated at hospital.
Hamilton Fire Department personnel worked for about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which had fully engulfed the Volvo by the time the crew arrived. An Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson said that weather conditions probably did not contribute to the accident, noting that the lines on the roadway were clearly visible. The report indicated that investigators had not ruled out the possibility that speed or alcohol contributed to the crash.
Drivers who operate their vehicles at excessive speeds, particularly while under the influence of alcohol, may lose control of their cars and strike other vehicles. These car accidents may claim the lives of negligent drivers and other people involved in the crash, often leaving families of victims without a source of financial and emotional support. However, personal injury lawyers may be able to advise families of their eligibility to file suit against the estates of deceased allegedly negligent drivers, which may lead to compensation for damages.
