Personal injury lawyers deal with seriously and catastrophically injured persons all the time. One of our objectives is obtain money to help disabled victims and their family.

Injuries can have life-long implications, consideration and future planning to address the specific needs and treatment of a disabled individual is paramount to restoring dignity and financial security for that person and his family. We regularly retain experts to prepare A Life Care Plan / Future Cost of Care report to identify all of the current costs associated with an individual’s injury, and in the future. A Life Care Plan / Future Cost of Care Report is prepared to educate the client, family members and health-care professionals about the individuals current and future needs, and creates a plan of action to decrease or eliminate the risk and severity of future complications from those injuries.

A Life Care Plan / Future Cost of Care Report provides the injured person, his family and support team with a clear path to follow throughout the injured person’s life and takes into account any probable future injury-related health changes.

The next several blogs will address the various elements that are considered in preparing a and Future Care Report, including: Transportation, Mobility, Attendant Care, Housing, Education and Communication, and Daily Living (including medication and rehabilitation).

Part 1. Transportation

Individuals that have been injured in accident are faced with many challenges. Transportation is one area that is considered and addressed in a future cost of care report.

What to consider when thinking about Transportation:

How will the disabled person go from point A to point B (i.e. para-transport or wheel-trans, private services, own vehicle?)
Does the person require a companion for travelling, both locally and out of town?
Can the person drive? If so, what type of modified vehicle is required?

What sort of Witnesses/ Experts are need to address Transportation issues?

Rehabilitation expert that can assess the person’s ability to drive; also a physician to address limitations and abilities and, if necessary, to address any MTO issues.

What Documentation/ demonstrative evidence could assist in addressing Transportation needs

Driving assessment report
Photos of proposed vehicle
Schedule of extra-ordinary cost of a vehicle, or schedule of quantum and cost of transportation services for the person and a companion, if required.
