A multi-vehicle accident that happened on Hwy 410 on Dec. 11 shortly before 3 p.m. during a blizzard resulted in several injuries. According to the report, police believe the crash was caused by a careless driver.

A multi-vehicle accident that happened on Hwy 410 on Dec. 11 shortly before 3 p.m. during a blizzard resulted in several injuries. According to the report, police believe the crash was caused by a careless driver.

The wreck began as an out-of-control westbound sports utility vehicle collided with an oversized truck just as the SUV, traveling on County Rd. 45 in Cobourg, was entering the freeway. The force of the impact caused the truck, which was towing a cherry picker machine, to jackknife. During the crash, the machine broke loose from the truck, smashed into the middle of the roadway and then overturned into the opposite side of the highway where one of its tires came loose and crashed into an oncoming car. An unknown amount of passengers riding in both the SUV and the car were hospitalised and treated for minor injuries. The truck driver did not report any injuries.

Law enforcement officials who arrived at the scene closed a section of the highway in both directions between County Rd. 45 and Burnham St. while investigators processed the accident and crews cleared the roadway. The lanes were reopened to traffic around 6 p.m. The driver of the SUV, a minor who resides in Port Hope, is facing careless driving charges, according to reports.
