When an Ontario resident suffers a brain injury, the effects can be devastating. The individual’s personality might change, and he or she could lose the ability to remember such things as longtime friends or even how to get dressed. Friends and family might not know how to react to the changes, but there are things that they could do for the injured individual, such as adapting to personality changes or potential emotional instability.

People who suffer brain injuries often have hope for their recoveries, and they appreciate honesty when it comes to their prognoses. Rehabilitation generally includes cognitive exercise, vocational and behavioural training and social skills. While adding more therapy may not necessarily help the individual, appropriate therapy exercises can be beneficial. Doctors encourage friends and family to be involved in the rehabilitation process.

Even rehabilitation will not help some of those who have suffered a brain injury. They may require constant care for the rest of their lives, and some individuals can even suffer paralysis. Most of these individuals are young adults, and the majority of them are men. Most of the bicyclists who die each year suffered a brain injury; many of these deaths can be avoided with the proper use of a helmet. Car accidents also cause a great number of brain injuries.

The advances in medical technology over the past three decades have led to many people with brain injuries surviving, but permanent brain damage still occurs. If someone has suffered a brain injury because of the negligent actions of a third party, the injured individual or his or her representative could file a personal injury claim. This may lead to the recovery of extensive medical and rehabilitative expenses.
